Joods Monument In Ermelo Op Komst

A monument to the Jewish community of Ermelo is coming

A place of remembrance for the Jewish community

The municipality of Ermelo has decided to erect a monument to the Jewish community that once lived in the town and which was almost completely wiped out during the Holocaust.

The monument will be a place of remembrance for the victims of the Holocaust and a reminder of the importance of fighting against anti-Semitism and discrimination, mayor Marion Leurs said during a meeting of the municipal council on Tuesday evening.

The Jewish community of Ermelo

The Jewish community of Ermelo has existed for more than 200 years. In the 19th century, many Jews settled in the town, mainly from Germany and Poland. They played an important role in the economic and social development of Ermelo.

In the 1930s, there were about 150 Jews living in Ermelo. After the German invasion in 1940, the Jews were subjected to increasing persecution. In 1942, all Jews from Ermelo were deported to the Auschwitz extermination camp, where they were murdered.

A place of remembrance

The monument will be a place of remembrance for the victims of the Holocaust and a reminder of the importance of fighting against anti-Semitism and discrimination.

The monument will be located in the center of Ermelo and will consist of a stone sculpture with the names of the Jewish victims of the Holocaust inscribed on it. The sculpture will be surrounded by a garden with trees and flowers.

The municipality of Ermelo hopes that the monument will be a place where people can remember the victims of the Holocaust and learn about the dangers of anti-Semitism and discrimination.

The fight against anti-Semitism

The fight against anti-Semitism is more important than ever, given the recent rise in anti-Semitic incidents in the Netherlands and elsewhere in Europe.

The monument in Ermelo will be a symbol of the fight against anti-Semitism and a reminder of the importance of tolerance and respect for others.
