Southgate's side secure top spot in Group A with 2-0 victory
Goals from Salt and Roy send Netherlands crashing out of the tournament
England booked their place in the quarter-finals of Euro 2024 with a 2-0 win over the Netherlands in their final Group A match on Wednesday. Phil Salt and Jason Roy were on target for Gareth Southgate's side, who finish top of the group with seven points.
The Netherlands, who needed to win to qualify for the knockout stages, started brightly but it was England who took the lead against the run of play. Salt smashed a half-volley into the top corner from the edge of the box in the 20th minute.
Roy doubled England's lead just before half-time, finishing off a sweeping move with a neat left-footed finish. The Netherlands had chances to get back into the game in the second half, but they were unable to find a way past England goalkeeper Jordan Pickford.
England will now face the runners-up from Group B in the quarter-finals, while the Netherlands are eliminated from the tournament.
